$86,365. A 2020 Defender HSE for $86k. Available at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . This is one of 7 Defenders they have in stock. 6 are priced in the high $80's. The other is just under $78k. Someone needs to explain to me how this would be better than a Bronco or a Wrangler because at this price I honestly don’ t get it.

So people know that you have a lot of money. Only reason.

That’ s what makes it even more weird. The general public has no idea what this thing is. All they will see is a Land Rover they’ve never seen before and probably wont give it a second glance.

Well, that’s a First Edition + a $ 10K markup (they do have a clear picture of the window sticker). Once they’re fully online you should be able to get the same thing for under $65K MSRP, so $55K sale price, in line with a GLC 43 or X3 M40i and below a Macan S. Should be a decent seller. I dunno about being better or offering value.

I don’t agree, I think those are pretty distinctive.

Yea there’ s a big price difference between these and the standard versions. But even the ones I’ve seen in the mid to high $50's is too much. I honestly don’ t think they will sell that well for some reason.

It has more power than a Wrangler, it probably rides better, it’s probably safer. Even though it’s a JLR product, it’s probably better built with nicer materials... etc.
The only areas
where a Wrangler will probably edge it out are
in resale value and MPG (but only barely)

I agree. It’ll beat it on road I’m sure. I cant wait for a comparison test though. The Wrangler diesel should edge it out MPG wise.

So everyone in LA (and the odd trailhead) knows just how wealthy you are. Too many Land Cruisers.

Land Rover is dead to me, I think the Bronco should be pretty good and have lots of trims to pick from. I am not a fan of modern Jeeps, I’ll take an old MB.

The same way a 911 Turbo is better than a Corvette ZR1? /s

I really can’t get away from those C pillars. They just look wrong.
I’d rather the Defender Hard Top, the commercial/business version.
Though being honest, I’d rather an older Defender 130 with a manual gearbox and not work about parts, servicing and new technology bedding in.

Whilst I agree with you...I will also cut LR some slack on this because this is clearly a full of exotic fruit HSE trim version plus someone is being enthusiastic at the dealer level.
Personally, I suspect these are probably quite fine cars but there’s no way I’d consider one because Land Rover Australia are (like Jeep Australia) fucking awful at after sales customer service and support... whilst also selling overpriced and underperforming automobiles that depreciate like a shot duck.

Why is it that ridiculously expensive? Because at the back of those Defenders, next to the badge that proclaims it’s engine, probably a P300 or P400, because America doesn’t get the diesel for some perplexing reason, it’ll say two words.
First Edition
Boom. Plus 15-30,000 more local currency because it’s got some options, sort of nice wheels and because it’s one of the first off the line, it means you pay way too much. Also as it’s a new hot product I suspect some dealer markup might be in play. For example, here in the U.K., I can order a Defender 110 D200 base, which comes with air suspension and some toys but not that many, for £45,000-ish if I want it in fuji white. £40,000 if I want a 90 in the same base spec. However, by playing around and building one online, I think I can get a 110 with the P300, in the correct blue or green with white roof (white steelies obviously) for under £55,000, or about £47,000 for a quite tooled up 90 in the same colour with the P300 engine. However, I can pay £57,000 now and get a first edition, which is basically the same but more expensive and has slightly different lights, but also less power, as they seem to only come with the D240 engine. At my local dealership, they have a preowned (the garage boss owned it before switching to another, but lower spec, Defender it seems) Defender 110 D240 first edition (those fucking words again... blood boiling from anger) for £68,000. Absolutely fuck off, that’s almost £30,000 more than a base, and only has 40 more hp. So basically in conclusion, dealerships price new shit up massively and First Editions are for people who want to be first and pay way too damn much for a car that could easily be had for under £40, 000...

I’ll take it if nobody else wants it.

For 70k I’ll take this one instead. Drive past it nearly every day last week while on vacation and drooled every time.

Honestly I don’t know why this and the Disco exist at the same time. They’re essentially the same market share in the US.

In person they are even more awkwardly huge.

Your second point would apply here in the US as well, with the exception being Range Rovers.

The basic steel wheeled versions (the work horses) you mentioned probably wont ever get seen here in the US. I suspect that Land Rover pretty much shipped just First Editions to the US. Lower spec ones might come later I hope. I dont think we are getting the basic ones you guys get though. But of the 311 total Defenders for sale here in the US, only one is under $60 grand and its just under $57,000. Everything else is $70k and up. Like you touched on, I honestly dont see why the First Editions are as much as they are, other than it being for people who want to be first like you said. Its all greed.

Exactly. And its not like one is lacking in off road chops over the other. They’re both Land Rovers. They have essentially made the Defender more posh. Like I get it, to reach a broader customer base, because not everyone lives on a farm or goes camping in the wilderness a lot. But unless this is supposed to replace the Discovery, I don’t get it.
![]() 07/11/2020 at 11:17 |

Plus they are basically the exact same, or will be once the d5 gets the new engines

I did read somewhere that Land Rover will start sending over the base ones, but from what I can tell it’s pretty much up to the dealers and people ordering them direct to chose the less expensive ones. I definitely imagine you won’t get the commercial Defender Hardtop , which has coils even on the 110 (lower spec regular Defenders get coils) , which would be a more appealing option than only just air suspension, at least for modding. Pity, but I’m sure the less sillily priced Defenders will appear at some point over there.

So it seems like, if the lower models will be order only, that anyone that wants one of those will have to wait till they start showing up used. And who knows when that will be.

I plan on buying the Bronco when it comes out, but as the owner of an LR4 and long time LR enthusiast, there is just something about them that is addictive. Sure they aren't reliable and sure the dealership experience is bad and God forbid you get in an accident and need to do repairs... but really there is just something wonderful about them.
